Widely considered the pinnacle of Romantic ballets, this hauntingly beautiful tale of love, betrayal, and sacrifice has enchanted audiences for centuries. Giselle will take you on a journey through madness and folklore to a spectral world where love conquers all. Ethereal pointework choreographed by Peter Wright after Petipa, elegant tutus curated by designer Peter Farmer, and complex character acting by our artists make this a must-see event!

NUTCRACKER

A gem in André Lewis O.M.’s legacy to leave the country with a holiday tradition inspired by Canada. When commissioning this new version, André insisted on including opportunities for the children as well as iconic Canadian symbols like the Ottawa Parliament buildings and busby-hat Mountie guards.

Embark on a whimsical adventure brimming with nostalgia and Canadian charm that ignites at the strike of midnight when Clara’s enchanted nutcracker springs to life under a moonlit sky. From a captivating clash with the mischievous Mouse King to the resplendent realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy, this production captivates with its unique blend of prairie flair and timeless allure!

Choreographed by esteemed RWB alumni Galina Yordanova and Nina Menon, and set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, this production not only showcases mesmerizing dance sequences but also boasts dazzling costumes envisioned by Paul Daigle and an awe-inspiring set masterfully crafted by Brian Perchaluk. JEKYLL & HYDE

CANADIAN PREMIERE!
“Enthralling, intense, terrifying and disturbing yet compellingly watchable.”
- Hilary Stroh | Bachtrack (2023) - reviewing Kansas City Ballet

Rated PG-13 for Suggestive Content

Lose yourself in the Canadian premiere of a menacing new story ballet from Val Caniparoli based on the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. An exploration of duality and the interplay of good and evil within oneself unfolds as a fever dream on stage purporting to be the hallucinations of the novella’s real-world author Robert Louis Stevenson. Upstanding doctor Henry Jekyll is tormented by the twisted desires of his alter ego, Edward Hyde, and succumbs to temptation and self-destruction as he unleashes the darkest parts of himself upon London. His reality soon becomes stranger than fiction as his two personas fight for control.

This dramatic depiction of human psychosis is told through Val Caniparoli’s signature choreographic lens and features music from renowned composes Frédéric Chopin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk Górecki, Wojciech Kilar and Henryk Wieniawski. Sets and costumes designed by David Israel Reynoso firmly root the story in Victorian England.

Notes: Jekyll & Hyde is a production by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, Helsinki. Premiere at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet on November 6th, 2020

BOLERO, ANGELS IN THE ARCHITECTURE & HIKARIZATTO

A dynamic mixed-repertoire program highlighting the history and versatile talents of the RWB is led by Mark Godden’s Angels in the Architecture. Set to Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, the choreography celebrates the spirit, creativity, and devotion of the Shakers community by infusing a balletic foundation with gestural movements and symbolic props.

Next up is Bolero, an abstract contemporary work influenced by Maurice Ravel’s composition of the same name. RWB Soloist Stephan Azulay’s mainstage choreographic debut pays homage to his upbringing by incorporating stylistic attributes from farruca, a type of flamenco music and dance, while weaving together larger ensemble sections and smaller group showcases to maintain a dramatic tension.

Last but not least is the return of Itzik Galili’s electrifying Hikarizatto. This athletic work whose title roughly translates to “crowded light” is a rhythmic journey of off-balance, hyper-kinetic movements and kaleidoscopic kicks accentuated by pulsating drumbeats. A testament to the authenticity and vitality of dance, it invites audience and performers alike to explore their inner selves.
